Three Days, Three Quotes Challenge -Day 1

This Door is Alarmed’ was nominated for this challenge by The Britchy One. Her site is a comical whirlwind; if you read a just one sentence, you will find yourself helplessly riding a tide of giggles and tremendous wit to her last word. I recommend checking her out.

Rules:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you.
  2. Post a quote for three consecutive days. (I am going to redesign ‘consecutive’ to mean ‘when you are able’ for my purposes.)
  3. Nominate three bloggers for each post.

Day One

I believe this quote may be a twist on the motivational words of Gold Medallist Jim Craig, ‘Don’t let your memories be bigger than your dreams.’

“Don’t let your dreams outnumber your memories.”

This quote changed my outlook, and reorganised my priorities. I first time I saw it was 2012 on my first ever trip to the USA. Two of us had been touring in a bright purple graffiti-covered camper we fondly named Nimbo. With Nimbo we had lived it large with locals in trailer parks, stepped the stars of Hollywood, and played the cards in Vegas. We had passed ghost towns and desert plains and driven quad bikes across sand dunes. We camped alongside free-roaming Elk in Grand canyon NP, observed bison and bears and all manner of wildlife in Yellowstone and… yeah, you get the idea. It was wonderful; crisp honest nature spliced with the temperamental hustle and bustle and bright city lights. It had been one of the best months of my life.

Just days from boarding the big metal bird back home, I saw the quote.

It was cheerfully painted on the bumper of a black bus-style camper, bobbing about as it gleefully bounced along the highway towards Los Angeles. We followed it for hundreds of miles and I must have read the words a hundred times.

The quote spoke to me of travels, of loved ones, of passions, and of the importance of making memories. Some say it is the things you don’t do that you regret more than you do; having memories is precious, having experiences—good and bad—is a recipe for a rich and worthwhile life. Life is for living, in whichever style you most like or are able; don’t put off your dreams until it is too late to accomplish them.

      1. I’m sure it has. It’s one of those lines that doesn’t let you sit still till you achieve your task or let go of whatever is stopping you. And it’s my pleasure. 😊

      2. Hehe, yes it it a nagging sort of quote 😁 I like the way you make the quote sound alive😊 I don’t think I would like it if words were alive. Words on advertisements would literally chase you down the street telling you to buy their product! 😂🤣😂

      3. The DP? It’s in kOLAKKHAM from our trip to Darjeeling. If I had kept the entire picture, you’d have found the entire Kanchenjungha range behind me. 🙂 🙂 🙂 It’s 2 years ago. And I really long to go back there. It was a such a soul soother, you know the hills and the ambiance and the chill? 🙂 🙂

      6. I am yet to step outside my country other than Bhutan and Nepal where I’ve been only en-route to tours in North of West Bengal. But the very first thing that attracts me about Europe is the cobblestone pavements. I so wish to visit it! ❤ ❤ ❤

      7. I really hope you can one day. Rome is spectacular, as is almost anywhere in Switzerland, and so many other places. I am lucky enough to have visited most countries here. If you ever want advice where is best to go, give me a shout! I have visited Nepal also, it is so different to India. Everything suddenly quietens. I have never been to Bhutan, are there some lovely places to see? Might go on my bucket list!

      8. Like I said, I have only visited the other 2 countries en route, She. And I was probably 9 or 10 when I did. I have been out on tours since 2 years old, my parents have been kind that way,not to let their daughter remember the places. 😛 😛 😛 lol! Lest they know I might run away! HA HA! Yeah I love to travel and would oneday want to visit Europe as well. I am so glad to have you to guide me, She. 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Ps. I bucket list is extra long. All of the countries and places in the world won’t fit in the comments. ha ha! 😛

  1. As I’ve recently just finished doing my nominations, I’m so glad to see that you’re doing the challenge and to read your answers! She, I agree with the post so much. In the past I would often daydream a lot instead of living life. Now, I try to participate in life as often as I can! I can’t remember the last time I daydreamed, that’s for sure 😅

Good luck with the rest of the challenges! Looking forward to your writing!

    1. Hi Claire! Thanks for dropping by 😊 Yes, it is true that life passes you by unless you grapple it by the heels and bundle it into submission. It is so much easier to dream and never accomplish. 😊

      1. I think, I’m trying to compensate for all the day dreaming I’ve done and to go and charge to experience. Makes a better story to tell at social gatherings 😂

      2. A great idea. I used to also spend too long caught up in reveries and I never got anything done. I used to wonder where my days disappeared to. The world in our heads can be all-consuming! It is always better to do something and have a good story to tell instead😊 I still find I have to give my head play time though or it stresses me out. 😂🤣😂😁

  2. I’ve never heard this quote before now but I don’t think I’ll ever forget it going forward. At first when I read it I was a bit confused. I am a dreamer by nature. I can easily say right now my dreams do outnumber my memories and I thought you can never have too many dreams for they are the beginning stage of goals. I almost assumed this was a quote against dreaming. Then I continued to read your explanation of the quote and the epiphany of understanding slowly dawned on me. I’d never considered that dreaming more than doing could be a bad thing. I love the story you included with this quote to help explain its profound meaning. I am looking forward to reading more of your story and posts. Thank you for sharing!

    1. What a wonderful to teach them. Memories make us who we are. I have always thought that our experiences define us is small ways as individuals.
